October '08 - ALBUM REVIEW
Gary Hunter has very kindly written this review of 'Slow motion pictures' on his My Space blog.

One of the artists on the "Here We Go - The Other Side Of Metal Beat" project was Paul Berry who has very kindly made his new album "Slow Motion Pictures" available as a free download. I have been listening to this album for the last couple of days and though it deserved to be reviewed, so, without further a do here are my thoughts:

"I Will Be With You" is the opening track and has an ambient feel to the start of it with the sounds used which then morphs in to electronica before you know it. I thought there was a strong Ultravox influence to this one certainly where the synth sounds used (Midge Ure era). Track 2 "Broken" flows nicely from the first track. Quite an atmospheric feel to this one with some nice guitar work on it. Influence wise I still think there is a hint of Ultravox mixed with Peter Gabriel. I did love the synths on this one.

The third track is the title track of the album "Slow Motion Pictures" and straight away the influence of Peter Gabriel hits you. Great bass line and haunting bass strings. Really liked the rhythm section. Quite a solid track this one which could very easily be Peter Gabriel if you didn't know it was Paul Berry that is probably the best compliment I can pay this track. "The Echo Of Your Voice" is a beautiful ballad with gorgeous pads and minimal rhythm & percussion. The introduction of piano on this track works a treat. Reminded me of some of the slow paced Ultravox tracks from a few years back. This I have to say is a brilliant track all round and my favourite so far.

"Kaleidoscope Life" is next with it's punchy intro which again sees a return to the Peter Gabriel influence. Quite a minimalistic track which builds in to a "Japan" like chorus. Love the use of the synths on this track. This is definitely a track that grows on you the more you hear it. Track 6 "Inside" is a Gary Numan influenced track especially the way he uses the piano to play the vocal line, something Numan is very fond of doing and to great effect to. Numan isn't the only influence, the chorus is very "Ultravox" with the sounds used.

"Lost And Found" clearly has an Ultravox influence in it's intro before it heads in to Duran Duran territory (guitar/vocals). This one is a bit more of a rock track and for me is the weakest track on the CD. "Forbidden World" sees us return to a brilliant electronic ballad which I thought had a touch of Joy Division about it (reminded me in parts of "Atmosphere"). A very eerie track and one I really enjoyed. The closing track is called "Satellites" which has a bit of a Depeche Mode feel to it. Nice piano mixed with some nice synthetic sounds. A good track to close off the album. A very talented person who has put together a fine collection of well crafted songs. Excellent production throughout 8.5/10
.

October '08 - NEW ALBUM - SLOW MOTION PICTURES

August '08 - HERE WE GO - JOHN FOXX TRIBUTE CD
The song 'A stranger in your house' has been included on the album 'Here we go - The other side of metal beat', a compilation album featuring artists influenced by the excellent John Foxx. The project has been put together by Matt Gunn at Toffeetones. More details are available
here.

Sep '07 - STARTLED BUNNY PODCAST
'The place to cry' has also been featured on one of the latest podcasts (no. 23) from Startled Bunny, along with a number of other tracks from signed and unsigned artists.

Sep '07 - COMPUTER MUSIC DVD TO INCLUDE PB TRACK
Issue 118 of Computer Music (out mid September '07) should be including 'The place to cry' on the DVD as well as a review of sorts. They often pick apart the production and recording of a song and may give it a real grilling...but I'm still really grateful they are including it. Computer Music is available in WHSmith etc all over the place.

Sep '07 - PLEASE CHECK OUT 'I AM JEN'
If you haven't already heard I am Jen's (Jen Scaturro's) fascinating music then please visit http://www.iamjen.com to hear some of her tracks. She is an extremely talented musician from New York and surely destined for success.

HMV BLACKPOOL STOCKS 'PARALLEL'

LIFE OF BRYAN

Sean McGinty played 'we fall in love' on his BBC Radio Lancashire BRYAN programme on 17th November. I am sure that if Sean gets enough requests he will play something else from the album (I promised him a pint). You can hear many other unsigned Lancashire based bands on the show, so if you don't like my stuff there may be something else on Sean's show that is of interest.   http://www.bbc.co.uk/lancashire/content/articles/2006/01/19/radio_bryan_sean_mcginty_feature.shtml

'PARALLEL' REVIEW BY PAUL GOODWIN
"Make no mistake, Parallel, the debut album from UK multi-instrumentalist Paul Berry, is a stellar record of rare, jaw dropping beauty, a recording heavily steeped in the kind of exquisite, ethereal melodies that, once heard, heads straight for the cerebral cortex and damn well stay there! With each play this intriguing album reveals more and more of itself until each and every chord, beat and word begins to take up squatter’s right in the memory banks. Paul’s moody, layered synth sound is nothing short of intoxicating, evoking fond memories of luminaries such as Depeche Mode, Gary Numan and even Vangelis during their early 80s synth heavy peak as he expertly weaves
his sonic tapestries over the album's 9 mesmerising songs.

Of the tracks on offer there is clearly much to admire with lush, otherworldly ballads effortlessly rubbing shoulders with the records rockier, more pulverising moments. The album itself opens up impressively enough with the Moby like commercialisms of “We Fall In Love”, a striking track that will surely feature heavily, over the coming weeks and months, on the play list any respectable DJ worth their salt. However though, for this writer, the highpoint of the record belongs to “A Stranger In Your House”, a pulse pounding, Ultravox like throbber that menacingly stalks the speakers with the kind of glacial chill you’d happily find on a Goldfrapp record. Equally the claustrophobic pre-emptive strike of “Angel” almost matches “Stranger” beat for beat as it rumbles on by simmering with barely suppressed aggression.

Elsewhere “One Day Soon”, “This Is How You Feel” and “Waiting For Eden” revel in epic, utopian backdrops whilst the windswept, cinematic sheen of “The Place To Cry” (a track that highlights Paul’s strong atmospheric leanings) is just about pipped to the post in the moody stakes by the Bladerunner like roar of the albums impressive title track. Concluding the record is “The Village”, a track that gradually drifts off into the ether over a somewhat disturbing, skin crawling industrial canvas bringing the album
to an assured and satisfactory finale.

Superbly produced and extremely professionally packaged, Parallel is an album that you will find yourself going back to time and time again. Now how many records can you say that about these days?"

Paul Goodwin, author of the Gary Numan collector's guide Electric Pioneer. November 2006.

'WE FALL IN LOVE' ON DANDELION RADIO
Andrew Morrison has playlisted 'we fall in love' on his November show on Dandelion Radio. This station is very much in the style of the late great John Peel and is well worth a listen for the many excellent unsigned artists that get played. Please support the station by giving the shows a listen (and perhaps request some more PB tracks!) www.dandelionradio.com/

PB FEATURED ON INSOMNIA RADIO
Stuart Morrison (no relation to Andrew - see above) played 'we fall in love' on episode 13 of Insomnia Radio UK recently. I think you can still listen to the show by logging on to http://uk.insomniaradio.net . If you like the song please download it from this site - it's a freebie.
